Yesterday evening, right as I was about to close my bedroom window, I caught sight of my black cat, Koi, out in the yard. To be fair, he’s usually outside around dusk, only heading back indoors when dinner time rolls around. Koi isn't the type of cat who likes staying cooped up inside anyway. More often than not, he looks like a tiny security guard, busy pacing back and forth around the perimeter of the house as if he’s on a routine patrol.
But yesterday, Koi’s patrol was anything but ordinary. Looking out from behind the glass, I realized he wasn't alone. He was squaring off against a remarkably large snake. I knew instantly it was a cobra, as I've encountered this specific kind around the property before, though usually much smaller in size.
My heart immediately skipped a beat seeing how close they were, barely a few inches apart. Fear kept me frozen for a split second, but the instinct to protect Koi quickly overrode everything else. I threw the window wide open and called his name out loud, trying desperately to break the intense eye contact locked between the two of them.
Fortunately, my voice broke the tension. The cobra seemed to have no interest in dealing with a human; it lowered its hood and quickly slid away, vanishing into the dark bushes before I could even grab anything to drive it off.
Even though the immediate danger has passed, the atmosphere around the house hasn't felt quite the same since. Even now, Koi remains on high alert. His ears constantly twitch at the slightest sound, and his eyes sharply scan every corner of the yard, as if he knows that the threat could return at any moment.
This lingering tension and heightened vigilance were exactly what compelled me to channel everything into the digital artwork I just finished.
Through this piece, which I’ve titled "Angel in Disguise", I wanted to capture the strange, almost mystical impression of that intense moment. Behind his familiar guise as a regular house pet, Koi proved that his daily "patrols" are far from just aimless wandering. In that twilight hour, he truly became a hidden guardian angel standing firm on the boundary between our home and the unpredictable dangers of the outside world.
