Dot grid or dotted paper journals are what I've been using for the past three years. I like the freedom and flexibility the dot grid offers.
I can doodle and write where ever I want on the page without the constraints of lines. And if I do want to write in straight lines the dots provide a guide to keep my writing neat.
On a blank page journal I have to carry around a ruler and I get this weird free falling feel when I look at all the blank space.
For me, the dot grid, dotted paper, journal is the best of both worlds!
What kind of paper do you prefer?
