use of silence and drone dissonance does it for me. Either that or background knowledge of the musicians. Alice in Chains comes to mind, their later material all being about depression and substance abuse

Spiritbox is the finest thing to come out of metal in the last 3 years IMO (predated by car bomb in 2016). I've had them on repeat all month, their rule of nines vocal playthrough is the gold standard
