Just few days ago I and my friends were just talking about this, the fact that we humans pretend to forgive and forget meanwhile in the real sense it's not really possible to totally erase the hurt because somehow the scare the pain is still there to remind you ...
so I came up with this analogy about our smartphone whenever we want to delete a file from our phones in most smartphones it doesn't delete outrightly but rather the system moves the file to your trash cane and stored it there for a period of time, same thing happens with we humans whenever someone hurt us it's there in our conscious mind what the person had done, but then when we decide to forgive we delete the painful memory from our conscious minds to our subconscious minds while it stays there once in a while we can still remember it,
To forget is where the real struggle is because of the memory which cannot be erased completely, however it takes some level of discipline, complete sincerity and absolute resolution to let go completely by doing this you completely and permanently wipe out the memory and cache of the hurt from your subconscious, by doing that you lift off the weight off your chest and allow peace and freedom into your heart again such that you can see the person and hug the person despite the hurt.
just like bro Eli analyzed why do we always remember the hurt, the pains, the bad things people have done to us that is because we proclaim to forgive but in our heart of hearts we haven't and that makes forgetting impossible
