Rimbik village, East India

The distance from Delhi to Rimbik village is very long and it takes more than 24 hours to cover it. By the way, this distance is 1598 km total. We first boarded the train which dropped us at Siliguri after 16 hours. After getting down from the train, we took a sharing taxi to Darjeeling which took 3 hours. After reaching Darjeeling, we took another sharing taxi which took another 4 hours to reach Rimbik village. Of course, this journey was of 24 hours but when we were on the journey, it seemed as if it would never end. Anyway, let's go on this journey.

There is a state located in the east of India whose name is West Bengal and in this West Bengal, there is a small village which is situated on the India-Nepal border. Talking about the population, the total population here is 2752 (2011). Some beautiful treks start from this village which take tourists to a place where the world's highest peak is in front of your eyes...seeing Mount Everest is a very pleasant experience.

I have come here to volunteer in the trail race organized here and I have to stay at many places on the route of this race for a few days. And due to this event, I have been getting a chance to visit this beautiful place for many years. While roaming on the route here, I visited Rimbik, Timbur, Gurdum, Ramam, Saro, Sepi and Kalyan villages. All these villages are situated in the lap of the mountains and live amidst such peace that there is no place for it.

The people here make their living from tourists, farming and animals. The daily routine here is very simple, people wake up in the morning and work in the fields and once a week they pluck vegetables from the fields and sell them in the Rimbik market. Mainly Hindu people live here, everyone speaks the Nepali language. Darjeeling is very close from here, which is a hill station established by the British which is still very famous for tourism in India.

I stayed in Rimbik village for about 12 days and every day I explored a new place. Living in the Himalayas is a unique experience in itself. This experience becomes more special when you get to hear the stories of the people here. I trekked about 200 km while staying here and ate a lot of different types of food. That's all for today's post, see you in the next post where I will present the story of another Himalayan village to you.
