This photo was taken from far away, so the fortress isn't so clear. Its not the first time that I took a photo of the Cittadella (Citadel), but I never took one from this or similar position. This photo was taken into a valley which is a bit hard to get to, so I doubt that many people saw the Citadel from this angle.
Where and what was the purpose of the Cittadella?
The Cittadella is the citadel of Victoria on the island of Gozo, Malta. During the medieval period, it served as a refuge for Gozo's population. Later on a major reconstruction of the southern walls of the Cittadella was undertaken between 1599 and 1622, transforming it into a gunpowder fortress. The northern walls were left intact, and today they still retain a largely medieval form. The new fortifications were criticized in later decades, and plans to demolish the entire citadel were made multiple times in the 17th and 18th centuries, but were never carried out.
By times the citadel always served as a protection to its population, during medieval wars and even in the world war 2 as they used the fortress as a shelter.
