Although I'm not a fan of games like Destiny (I equate them with addictive redflag), I've heard many times online that Destiny has good gunplay and atmosphere. Players also praised the atmosphere at the beginning, before the bosses became bullet sponges. Apparently, the Destiny developers were out of ideas for certain segments and parts of the game... Well, it didn't go so well, as you say. I've heard online friends complain about similar things a few times, when Bungie's game was quite popular there.
