History of Shelby GT 350

In 1964, Ford had a huge success with its new Ford Mustang, but realized that they need to have a muscle model in order to compete in the US SCCA in the B production category, because at this time : "Winning races on Sunday is selling cars on Mondays."

Ford asked to Carroll Shelby, winning partner of many races with his Ford-powered Cobra, to modify a Mustang. The first prototype Shelby GT 350 are made in December 1964 by Shelby American. Two versions were produced :

🚗 R for Racing with 34 cars built for the competition,
🚗 S for Street with more comfort, only 562 examples.

Carroll Shelby and his team Shelby American upgraded the Mustang fastback with performance upgrades and better engine in order to compete against Sunbeam Tiger, Jaguar E-Type or Chevrolet Corvette in the SCCA B-Production Class.

This example was produced in the small facility of Venice (California) just before the move to LAX to larger premises. The earliest batch of 1965 is the most desirable for collectors as it most faithfully represent the original purpose of the GT 350 program.

Specification

The Shelby GT 350 is equipped with the Hi-Po 289 cu V-8 beefed up by Shelby Team producing 271 hp (35 hp more than the standard Hi-Po. The car can reach 100 kmh in just 6.5 seconds.

This model has its early production features including the larger wood steering wheel, the original oil pressure gauge and tachometer...

It is finished in Wimbledon White, with Guardsman Blue stripes with Cragar wheels made exclusively for Shelby. In the interior, there is the Carroll Shelby’s signature on the glovebox 👍
