These two trees tower above our house and yard. They lean together to form an arrow pointing to the top of the picture frame. It's hard to see in this shot but the branches are covered with white blossoms in bunches like wisteria or grapes.
Sorry the zoom on my phone's so blurry, but this shot does show the flowers much better.
I look forward to their bloom every summer because when these two huge trees bloom, their sweet scent infuses the yard with the most intoxicating perfume. Especially on hot muggy summer days when, sinking down through the blossoms, the fragrant-laden air can take your breath away.
Unfortunately, locust have bad years when they barely flower at all.
And the weather does not always cooperate. A windy day can simply sweep their sweetness away to who knows where, without leaving so much as a lingering trace behind.😫
The bloom time never seems nearly long enough either, three or four days max. So any time I catch even the slightest wiff, I stop and stand there taking deep breaths, trying grasp the ephemeral essence before it dissipates and evaporates away.
This spring I picked a few flowers from the low hanging branches to fill the living room with their signature scent. Every time I walked past, I briefly burrowed my face into the blossoms to inhale their fleeting fragrance.
Problem is that both trees lean precariously over the yard, threatening the multiple structures situated beneath their huge trunks and branches. So we really have no choice but to have them taken down before they fall.
Knowing that this is their last year to bloom deeply saddens me. It's like losing connection to a past that their haunting fragrance could almost bring to mind. Well scents are like that, aren't they?
To comfort myself I plan to nurture and care for one of their offspring from last year that seeded in our yard. I hope that it will flower even when it's young and that it will stay small, instead of becoming a huge juggernaut like its parents.
Thanks for stopping by and reading my post, and I want to thank for hosting the #treetuesday challenge! Hope this one wasn't too much of a downer.🤔
