I just watched mutiny and I think this is one of those movies where you already know exactly what you're getting before you even press play....
It's Jason Statham.
He's angry.
People have done something terrible.
There are guns.
There are fights and eventually, a lot of people are going to regret getting in his way...
Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed it than I expected.
The movie is about Cole Reed, played by Jason Statham, a former Special Forces guy and ex-New York cop who now works private security... His billionaire friend and boss, Tibu is murdered right in front of him and Cole is immediately framed for the crime... Now he's on the run, trying to figure out who actually killed Tibu while uncovering a much bigger international conspiracy and this is where the movie gets moving pretty quickly.
Cole eventually ends up on a cargo ship surrounded by people who definitely aren't there to help him.... So basically, Statham gets trapped on a giant ship with a bunch of dangerous men...You can already guess how that's going to go....
I actually liked the setting....
Most action movies like this would have the hero running through some random city, but putting almost the entire story around a cargo ship gives Mutiny a more contained feeling. There aren't many places to hide, and there isn't exactly anywhere to run when you're in the middle of the ocean....
The action is definitely the strongest part....
Statham doesn't suddenly become a hero... He gets punched, kicked and beaten up, but he keeps going.... The fights are rough and physical, and there are some genuinely nasty moments.
There's one particular fight involving a staircase that I really enjoyed. The movie also gets creative with the environment, using the tight spaces and equipment around the ship instead of just giving us another generic shootout.
The supporting cast is pretty good too.. Annabelle Wallis plays a third mate who gets involved with Cole, while Adrian Lester and Roland Møller add some extra personality to the story but I especially liked Wallis because she doesn't just stand around waiting for Cole to save her.... She gets involved in the action and actually contributes to the story.
But the writing?...
Yeah... that's where things get a little shaky...
The conspiracy isn't exactly difficult to figure out as You can see some of the big reveals coming from quite a distance and there are moments where the movie feels like it's following an action-movie checklist...
Rich billionaire gets killed.
Hero gets framed.
Hero goes on the run.
Bad guys chase hero.
Hero discovers conspiracy.
Hero beats everyone up... And We've seen this before.
The movie also doesn't spend enough time developing Cole emotionally. We know Tibu was important to him, but I wanted to feel that relationship more. The movie tells us Cole is grieving and angry, but it didnt make us feel his grief and that's probably why I wouldn't call Mutiny a great action movie but I would definitely call it a fun action movie.
Now here's the difference.
Sometimes you just want something straightforward...
You don't want ten complicated plot twists...
You don't want three hours of character development...
You just want to sit down after a long day and watch Jason Statham kick some criminals through a wall and Mutiny does just that...
The movie is also only around 95 minutes, which I think works in its favor because It doesn't spend forever explaining things before getting to the action.
Rating: 75/100
