Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 26:13-17

Isaac gained protected status from Abimelech last week. Some of the Pelishtim (Philistines) were becoming very envious of his success and wealth. Since they could not touch the object of their ire, they had filled in and plugged up all the wells that Abraham had dug.

King Abimelech appears to be getting nervous about the tension in the air this week, and he seems to feel that Isaac is powerful for some reason. The king asks Isaac to leave.

He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him. Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father. And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we."
So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there.

The story continues next week as Isaac opens the wells...
