Hello, Hive friends, especially everyone in the Hive Pet community!
Today I'd love to introduce one of my favorite little companions. His name is Dark Kulla, a male betta fish that I've been raising and caring for over the past five months.
I actually have eight betta fish of different varieties, and each one has its own unique personality. Some are incredibly aggressive, some are calm, while others are constantly swimming around whenever they notice movement outside their tanks. But out of all of them, Dark Kulla has a special place in my heart. Dark Kulla is a Crowntail Betta, and the first time I saw him, I instantly fell in love with his appearance. His fins are unlike any other variety, stretching outward like the sharp quills of a porcupine. They give him a fierce yet elegant look. His body is covered in deep black scales, making him look mysterious and powerful. That's exactly why I decided to name him Dark Kulla.
My favorite moment is when he starts flaring. Every morning, I place a small mirror beside his aquarium for a few minutes. As soon as he notices his own reflection, his entire attitude changes. He spreads every fin to its fullest, opens his gill covers wide, and slowly glides through the water as if he were showing off his strength. Watching him flare never gets old. His Crowntail fins transform into what looks like a magnificent crown made of sharp black spikes. It's honestly difficult to describe just how beautiful he looks during those moments. Even after seeing this routine almost every day for five months, I'm still amazed every single time.
I also believe that live food plays a huge role in keeping a betta healthy and vibrant. That's why I make sure Dark Kulla receives live food every day. His favorite meal is Daphnia, although I occasionally treat him to mosquito larvae as well. From my experience, live food keeps bettas more active, enhances their colors, and helps them grow much better than relying solely on pellets. Fortunately, I've been learning how to culture live food myself. Not only does it save money, but it also ensures that the food I give my fish is always fresh and nutritious. There's something incredibly satisfying about feeding your fish with live food you've cultivated yourself. It makes the entire fish keeping experience feel much more rewarding. Besides nutrition, I also pay close attention to water quality. I never let the water go too long without maintenance. Regular water changes help keep Dark Kulla healthy and reduce stress. I also keep a few aquatic plants inside his aquarium to create a more natural environment. Even though it's just a small tank, I want it to be a comfortable home where he can thrive.
One of the reasons I enjoy keeping bettas so much is their personality. Many people think fish are just silent pets without any character, but I couldn't disagree more. Every betta has its own unique behavior and temperament. Dark Kulla, for example, almost always swims toward the front of the aquarium whenever I come close. Sometimes it feels like he's asking for food, while other times he's simply curious about what I'm doing. The moment I pick up the container filled with Daphnia, his excitement becomes obvious. Little interactions like these make me feel that there's a genuine connection between a fish and its owner.
Keeping bettas has also taught me a great deal about patience and consistency. Healthy fish don't happen by accident. They require daily care and attention. Cleaning the tank, maintaining good water quality, providing nutritious food, and carefully observing their condition all become part of a routine that requires commitment. Many people choose furry companions like cats or dogs. As for me, I find a different kind of happiness in a small fish swimming gracefully through the water. It may sound simple, but after a long and exhausting day, watching Dark Kulla slowly glide around his aquarium with his beautiful fins flowing behind him is incredibly relaxing. There's a peaceful feeling that comes from quietly sitting in front of his tank for just a few minutes. I truly hope Dark Kulla continues to stay healthy and remains by my side for many years to come. Maybe one day he'll even become a breeder and produce a new generation of beautiful Crowntail bettas with the same striking appearance.
Thank you so much for stopping by and reading about Dark Kulla. I hope all of you in the Hive Pet community continue enjoying every moment with your beloved pets. And if you keep bettas too, I'd love to hear your stories in the comments. It would be a pleasure to read about your own experiences.
See you in my next Hive post!
