'Guyyys did you see how strong that Terminator guy was looking. Those guys really tried by escaping him ooo" I was telling my friend Ade
'You think having muscles is by running your mouth, you need to come gym with us" was the reply I got
I'd just watched the Terminator movie the night before and was sharing my reviews with my classmates. Although the movie was quite interesting, what caught my attention most was how ripped the Arnold Schwarzenegger guy was looking.
Ade one of my classmates and also the strongest amongst us had a lot of older brothers, so he had access to their make shift gym equipments.
My story was soon sidelined as Ade launched into a of how we could achieve that body shape if we kept a strict gym routine.
Of course I loved the muscles I'd seen and was interested in looking as strong as Arnold, so like most of my classmates I volunteered to come over to Ade's house over the weekend inorder to join their fitness exercise.
The problem was that we were all teenagers and almost everyone had next to no experience with gyms, so every word out of Ade's mouth was regarded as gospel.
One of the first issue had to do with food. According to our new gym instructor Ade, we all had to change our diet.
'You see those strong guys, they don't eat all these sweet sweet things you guys eat during lunch break." Ade continued his lecture on how to achieve the perfect body.
I was listening but I wasn't even interested anymore, because how would anyone isinuate that i forgo doughnuts or ice-cream just to gain some extra muscle.
Besides who made him an expert on the human body, he was only lucky to have brothers that taught him a few things here and there. All of these thoughts were going through my mind when we eventually dispersed to focus on other things.
Weekend came, but unfortunately I couldn't join my friends to start the new routine. I called and promised to join them the next week.
I could hear from the noise in the background that they were having quite a lot of fun and they were quick to remind me of all the action I was missing.
If there's anything people spend faster than paychecks, then it has to be the weekends.
The weekend was gone, Monday was here again and like every good student, I dragged my reluctant body to school.
It was going to be a long week as usual, but at least I had a lot of gist to look forward to. I wanted to see just how much changes my friend had added over the weekend.
I got to class and many of them were not yet in class, which was strange because I wasn't known to be an early bird.
The few who were around were seated huddled in a corner looking like they'd seen a horror movie the night before.
From my quick detective work, I was able to gather that most of them didn't sleep well the night before due to body pains from weight lifting and other rigorous exercises.
As the others eventually came in, the story was the same for almost everyone of them. It wasn't hard to deduce what had happened over the weekend.
Guys can be quite competitive when they're gathered around because everyone wants to show off. If a guy does fifty push ups, his friend will definitely want to do fifty one just to beat the previous record.
Apparently what had began as fun and motivation had quickly turned into a competition amongst them to see who could do better. Of course it was good to have fun, but they'd forgotten their bodies wasn't used to that much stress, hence the body pains.
They'd all woken up in pains and some serious scolding from some of their parents. I was looking smug, because it seemed my laziness saved me from adding another headache to the list of challenges I was looking forward to facing for the week.
My seatmate didn't even come to school that day and if I had to bet, I knew where to put my money. As i sat down alone, I tried to conjure the biggest looking doughnut I could think of.
I could always admire Arnold Schwarzenegger whenever I wanted to, but what I wouldn't do was motivate myself to the point of pains.
