The future might look more green than any one realize. You see, there a concept that have been in existence and have recently been looked at as a solution to smog and air pollution. As it is known with the growth of a country the rate of air pollution that comes from manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, and energy consumption will increase.

Italian architect, Stefano Boeri started to develop this idea through his works in Milan and in Lausanne.

(Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) is a pair of residential towers in the Porta Nuova district of Milan, Italy, between Via Gaetano de Castillia and Via Federico Confalonieri near Milano Porta Garibaldi railway station)

China is a major global economy that has the resources, labor, skills, international influence that allows for it to compete with any of the first world countries on a global scale. In the past 20 years China has seen major improvement and is the only country to have developed many cities in this period, however this development have been accompanied with made downsides. Many of the different types of pollution have drastically increased, especially smog. The amount of smog has gotten so bad that the levels have to be constantly monitored, so schools and other places must be closes when it gets too high. Many people have to wear masks and the smog has serious effect on those with respiratory issues.

China has decided that it needs to tackle this problem and has sought out Stefano Boeri come up with ideas of it’s Forest City concept. This concept that the government employed is for the purpose of having cities that are made up of plant-covered skyscrapers to be across the urban areas of China to help battle urban pollution. The first plan that is being formed is the Liuzhou Forest City. This plan has the structure of nearly 40,000 trees and close to 1 million plants, the biodiversity will be composite of 100 different species. All of this greenery is designed to trail over balconies and the roofs of many skyscrapers. Overall, this plan is set to cover 175 hectares along the Liujiang river. Liuzhou will provide homes for 30,000 across a variety of residential areas, and include commercial and recreational spaces, two schools and a hospital. It is estimated that the greenery will absorb nearly 10,000 tons of CO2 and 57 tons of pollutants per year, while also produce approximately 900 tons of oxygen.

(The concept of Liuzhou Forest City.)

The implications of such an undertaking and this concept itself is that not only help to minimize air pollution, but will help with deforestation and biodiversity.

The major take away is that the vegetation system of the Vertical Forest contributes to the construction of a micro-climate, produces humidity, absorbs CO2 and dust particles and produces oxygen, which is beneficial to all.
