The November sun kissed violently
On my head that afternoon
I think the sun went nude
Unclad and scorching
Forced himself on me
Penetrated my vest and
Torched my fresh skin
Decoloured a girl's face
They called it sunburn
In this natural molestation,
Everyone busied himself.
Merchandising and buying.
And the "barrow pusher"
Kept shouting "uzo "uzo" "uzo"
My brother Uzo turned a thousand times
An officious demand by the hustler
For a space to push his carriage
Sounded to Uzo like he was being called.
Then suddenly
He came from God-knows-where
Sweating from every pore
Drenched in sweat
And gesturing an embrace
Smelly armpit that sent
An acrid stench to my
Unsuspecting nostrils
I paused for a few seconds
Breathed not
How can I take all of that?
I turned my face from the missiles
Seemed the safest strategy
Chidi my Aba brother
Always promised me Aba bread
But something changed about him
He looked older
Amidst broad smiles, he released
Another missile.
"My wife don born"
I paused again.
Thinking not
Is that supposed to be his 10th?
I resumed thinking.
Just then,
Chants of "come I have what you want"
Filled my ears
Sounded more like what the native doctors
In Africa Magic say when a client enters the shrine
"My daughter, I know why you are here"
"Your grandmother is a witch"
"I will be on a rampage of denying
All they have" I told Uzo
It is a worthy adventure
Now the advances from the sun,
Chidi's missiles,
And the roudy environ
All playing a part in my frustration.
