Shoots are part of a new plant growing from sprouts or buds that are above the surface of the soil / media. Shoots can consist of stems, coupled with young leaves, prospective flowers, or would-be fruit. In the term physiology of plants, buds also mean all parts of plants that are not roots, ie parts of plants that tend to have negative geotropism (or positive heliotropism).
