Hi, good day! Welcome back to my yet another Saturday Experiments with the boys I tutor! It is still school holidays here, the last Saturday before returning to school and I could see they were a bit lazy. To kick-start our revision class, we did a simple experiment, which is the Burning Candle Water Rising Experiment.
I saw that I have this Science Experiment kit at home so I brought along for class today to "wake them up".
Materials and Ingredients

How to Carry It Out
First fill the plate with some water and add in any food colouring that you like.
Stir the food colouring evenly as it mixes with the water. So the water turned blue since I added blue food colouring.
Light the candle with the lighter.
Invert the beaker onto the candle and observe carefully.
You will see that the candle flame will go off and then the water level started to rise. The food colouring was added to see the result more obviously.
Explanation
As the candle burns, the water evaporates to water vapour. Air cools when the candle flame is seen gone off. When cooling happens as the candle goes out, it creates a lower air pressure in the beaker or glass than the outside pressure. The water is therefore kind of pushed into the glass.
Yay it was a successful experiment!
After that, I could tell they are more enthusiastic to start their Science revision. Today we revised on Coordination and Response which involves homeostasis and then Reproduction.
Was just trying to add a little fun for learning 馃槣 I too feel like doing this experiment at home with my son since it is easily done.
