Ran into this problem today and it took me a while to figure out, but I thought I would share because I did not find any clean solutions posted when I had the problem. It sucks to hit a brick wall like this when making a post.

Before making my post I gathered my thoughts in Microsoft Word... Well, that was the problem. When I copy/pasted the document there were characters that Steemit's HTML does not support. My problems were quotations ( " " ) and hyphens ( - ). What I just typed works fine, but if they look like this:
Another bad character is this one:
So make sure if you copy/paste your post from a word document to run through and switch all of these symbols because you will not be able to post otherwise.
