Diarrhea sometimes brings misery to the enjoyment of the travelers. Around 50% of the travelers suffer from such illness. Though, in most of the cases, it is self-limiting (resolves in 4-5 days), sometimes it might persist for a long time (more than 1 month). So during travel, travelers should take some preventive measures to avoid such diarrhea.
- Be extra careful to eat and drink uncontaminated food and water
- Food should be cooked freshly, not reheated food.
- Try to avoid salads, cold fish/meats
- Eat fruits which can be peeled off. Remove outer portion before eating.
- Always drink boiling or bottled water with intact seal. Try to avoid ice in drinks.
- If needed, use water purification tablets.
What to do if you are already a victim of travelers' diarrhea?
- Use more and more Oral Re-hydration fluids
- Only use antidiarrheals if impossible to get a toilet
But do not use antidiarrheals if blood is seen in stool or associated with fever or age is less than 10 years. In such conditions, must see a doctor.
