Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges which is the covering of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain and the spinal cord comprise our central nervous system. Meningitis due to any reason is dangerous but if or when it is due to a particular bacterium called Neisseria meningitidis or meningococcus it may become so deadly. The bacteria infect mostly the children between birth and 5 years of age; the time when the body immunity is yet developed fully. Adolescents and young adults are also at risk of meningococcal meningitis.
