Thirty years ago RoboCop arrived in the American cinemas!
They do not make movies like this anymore!
RoboCop is one of the greatest American folk classic movies of the 1980s, but what makes it immortal is its ability to speak of America at that time as it is today. Satire masked by great entertainment - and this is mainly due to that genius of the director Paul Verhoeven, who would have been ready for a bis with Total Recall a few years later.
If you are too young and think that the recent remake of RoboCop is a great movie. I have news for you: it is not, even remotely ...
They do not make this kind of movie anymore. It seems like a cliché, often it is. But RoboCop is actually a movie that really uncommon, especially in the Hollywood mainstream. It is pure political satire and social denunce, masked by action movies. That's what big science fiction should always be: a look at the present, mirrored by a distorted future that highlights the most sinister developments.
It is far-sighted. RoboCop is a lucid reflection on the authoritarian power and the ubiquitous media gaze that enter our homes and mesmerize us. Along with Demolition Man is an action film capable of predicting many happenings of the modern societies. With enormous foresight, imagine a future where dictatorships no longer serve intimidation and violence to stifle the freedom of citizens. Instead, it's enough to give them everything they've always wanted.
It is full of violence. Paul Verhoeven was not at all light with the shedding of blood. It is enough the scene where the ED-209 refill with lead an OCP clerk to figure out not to be in front of a today movie. In the 1980s there was much more freedom to overcome with violence if it had a logical sense. Verhoeven seems to be the master of the gratuitous carnage (think also of Total Recall but also of the later Starship Troopers), but in reality he uses it to shock, to point out almost parodistic exaggeration. A thin line that only he knew how to ride with great skill.
The character of RoboCop became a real icon in those years. Even those who had never seen the movie knew him. The look of the character was designed by the great Rob Bottin, creator of the special effects of "The thing". The costume cost was set to more than a million dollars.
Peter Weller - Robocop. Maybe underestimated, because deeply hidden by a heavy costume for most of the film? No, Peter Weller is instead a master actor. In the film, there is a great mimic work: reciting with hidden eyes and passing on to history is not everyone. And think that Verhoeven and production would have preferred Rutger Hauer or Arnold Schwarzenegger in the main role.
“Vivo o morto, tu verrai con me!!!”
"Dead or alive, you are coming with me." There are a few memorable phrases like this. Murphy / RoboCop's joke is still in the top five of the best American action movies sentences today.
