“Why is it that we don’t ask God for things and assume that the Lord knows our needs? The Lord wants to hear us ask him.”
This quote came from Angus Buchan’s 21 Days on the Power of Prayer, found in the YouVersion Bible app.
This want for God to hear from us felt familiar, and it struck me as such a human thing to want. I imagine it’s a similar thing to a mother wanting to hear from her kids who have moved away a lot more than her kids want to talk to her.
The other part of this quote convicted me as well and reminded me of marriage. For some reason, married couples tend to assume their spouse knows what they want and then get upset when their wants and needs aren’t met. There’s almost an expectation of “well you should know me well enough to know what I want”.
But God does already know our needs and wants. He literally can read our mind. So, we slip into this lazy way of thinking “Well God knows what I want. Imma just sit here then and let Him take care of me”.
Have you ever had someone you care about ask you for help, after you’ve watched them struggle for too long? I imagine my husband feels this when I constantly deny his offer to help when I can’t open a jar. How good does it feel when they finally give up and humbly ask for your help? To be there for someone is an amazing feeling!
I imagine God’s just there, waiting for us to acknowledge that we’re trying to futilely fix something we’re not strong enough to fix. And when we finally ask for help, he gives us a hug and doesn’t even ask what took so long.
