The shadow of E3 still looms over us all as even if the event isn't going to happen again officially, we still have Summer Games Fest, a festival that in my opinion is way better than the generic corpo huge budget event we had every year at E3.
This leaves a lot more freedom for creators and big publishers alike, without having to focus so much on big flashy in-person presentation or budgets in the millions.
Today whilst searching for a fun free to play game to play later, I stumbled upon Summer Game's Fest icon on the Steam store in my phone. The page looks... Barren, and the selection for featured titles is a little puzzling to me. But as if anyone cared, I've decided to give out my thoughts about this game, and I hope any negativity I have is squashed in the future - and that any positivity isn't too terribly destroyed by the inevitable fate of every game release nowadays.
This is going to be quite a simple post, as I'm doing it from my phone. So excuse the severe lack of editing.
Fort Solis - This looks interesting, it's a neat concept where something goes wrong in Mars and things turn spooky, then it's up to you to deal with the consequences. While the premise sounds like Doom 3, the game itself looks a lot more something like Alan Wake, and that's a classic I loved.
I'm a bit tired of horror games lately so only time will tell if this one can actually excede my expectations.
Midnight Suns - Now this looks interesting. Marvel games have recently been on a upswing, and this looks like tons of fun. I was expecting another generic action title that still managed to be fun, but instead we're getting a strategic card based RPG. This is already more than enough to catch my eye, and the setting itself is far different from the overused Avengers plotline. I'm genuinely excited for this one now.
The Quarry - Did I say I'm tired of horror games? Because this looks like exactly the reason why. Way too generic. Seems like just another game trying to be a Netflix mini-series, and the Mixed reviews don't give me high hopes for this. This is the first baffling decision to put on the featured titles list for me.
Layers of Fear - Ok... This again. Ooo spooky monsters spawned from the imagination of artists, a pyschedelic horror spooky story ooo.
Pass.
Super People - Character based battle royale game. Might be played for 2 weeks at most. Market is too saturated and this doesn't seem to bringing much to the table.
Warhammer 40k: Darktide - HELL YEAH. I love hack and slash games and stuff set in the Warhammer 40K universe usually turns out pretty awesome. This looks like it can be brutal and brutally fun. Only time will tell, but I really hope it doesn't get screwed up
Midnight Fight Express - Really promising looking indie beat em' up with a neat art style. Kind of reminds of Hotline Miami, but likely a lot easier. Definitely looks neat, not bad.
Flashback 2 - A sequel to the critically acclaimed 90's classic. Not to sure about this one, looks a little low budget but can end up being a great game nonetheless.
Nightingale - There have been some recent open world PVE survival games, but I'm not sure how much more of this I can take... Besides the cool title I don't see how much different this is from 90% of the rest of the market.
Highwater - Great artstyle and an interesting enough plot premise seem to make this a promising strategy adventure title, there's a lot that could go right here. It'll be a matter of time to see what will.
The Callisto Protocol - Feels like Fort Solis but more action oriented, a higher budget and set on a different celestial body. This does look really good but nothing that we haven't seen before. It could end up being a great time and I hope it's more part of the recent renaissance in horror games than just an action packed slogfest.
I'm going to skip Outrider's expansion because I'm still playing the main game. It's a wonderful game and I have no doubts this will be pretty great.
Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium - Screw. This.
Capcom wants to charge us more for arcade titles. The first one was already overpriced, and now we get this. If they decided to have done something akin to SEGA's Mega-Drive games on Steam, I would've been fine with it, but this is clearly just a way to get money from nostalgia.
Humankind - The trailer for this is awesome. This game came out a little while ago, but it's still getting updates and it's incredibly fun. If you're into strategy games like me, definitely check it out. Reminds me of the later Civ games but with less DLC.
Again skipping an expansion pack, I've never even played Cuphead (and I seek to rectify such mistake in the near future).
Routine - Horror game... Set on an abandoned... Lunar base.
THIRD ONE SO FAR. This one stands out due to its artstyle but this can't be coincidence, what is up with the space horror games?
Soul Hackers 2 - Cyberpunk JRPG with demons... Shin Megami Tensei, anyone? This does look really cool and stylish and it tickles my weebishness. I'll keep an eye on this one as it looks right up my alley. Only time will tell if the gameplay is as nice as its arstyle.
American Arcadia - A stylized futuristic Truman Show. Could end up being pretty good, the premise is nice at least, I've never seen a game do this before. I like it, but not much else.
Neon White - I've been waiting for this for a while now. It's a speed focused FPS where you can sacrifice your guns for parkour moves that let you go faster. It's a really cool concept and the art style is really pretty. Unlike the shooter below, this brings something new to the table.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - As much as it's just another CoD, I still hope it's a good game. I loved the story on the first reboot MW and I hope this continues that without losing its momentum. I've yet to play Black Ops Cold War, but the MW reboot was a great game. Multiplayer wise it was also quite fun. Returned to a more familiar CoD formula whilst innovating at the same time. I don't doubt good things can come out of this.
Stormgate - A free to play RTS game with PvP and co-op. This is something I haven't really seen that much before, and being a big fan of games such as Warcraft and Age of Empires, I hope it succeeds. Too bad it's only coming out in 2023.
Turtles: Shredder's Revenge - A retro arcade style TMMT beat em up game. A pleasant surprise for me, as I loved the older titles back in the SNES. The animations look really fluid and this could one of the better 2D games from recent years.
Aliens Dark Descent - Another spooky space game, but not a horror one this time. Looks like a fun co-op top-down shooter, much akin to something Valve has done before on the Source engine and that was so forgotten even I can't recall its name now. But I think I'll just keep playing that Valve one instead.
Last one on this page is Warframe, presumably because of its free expansion. This is a game I'm still diving in, but from Warframe's past history I can safely assume this will not disappoint.
Gotham Knights - Open-world Gotham game... I never really liked Batman too much, outside of his cameos and the recent Joker movie, so I can't say I'm too excited for this one. But I hope it ends up being fun.
Metal: Hellsinger - It's Doom with more music. First trailer literally starts with Serj Tankian. Sign me the F up. This looks and sounds incredible. Let's go baby.
Thanks for reading the mad ramblings of someone trying to not freeze in the Brazilian winter. Have a good one.
