Generative Art Experiments: Getting 45° Angle In Midjourney
Should you want to leverage MidJourney for any commercial activities, angle control may prove crucial to your efforts. I tested a few methods to get my Hanfu-clothed necromancer under 45°. This angle has several names.
- Dutch Angle
- Dutch Tilt
- Oblique Angle
- Vortex Angle
- Canted Angle
Comparison Picture
For comparison, I will be using output from the seed 2245469304 you can see above. Pictures 2 and 4 seem to be already under a certain angle. Will further experimenting turn pictures 1 and 3 too?
Note: --s 800 is used as I didn't intend to make these necromancers for a post like this, but it is used with all of them, so should not be a major issue.
Dutch Angle::3
Dutch Angle is the language reference to 45° which seems to be preferred by ChatGBT I got the idea from. Unfortunately, it will sneak some elements of Dutch culture into your output, even though number 3 was successfully turned.
You can see how this is problematic. I only made one typo, did not copy full 'necromancer' and it all ended up more Dutch-looking.
Better, but elements of Dutch culture are still present, mostly in picture number 1. What if I make it directly part of the prompt?
Number 1 seems turned, but number 3 is back to the front-view. Let's see how other options perform.
Vortex Angle, Canted, Oblique and 45°
Adding an angle mathematically does nothing.
Vortex, just like Dutch, has an alternative meaning. With MJ, it is best to use words that don't have alternative interpretations. Vortex altered the output significantly but not in the desired way.
Canted managed to correctly paint a picture number 1, but 2 and 3 are direct front-view. I expected more from this one.
An oblique angle is the most successful wording. All of the pictures appear to be under an angle that ranges from 20° to 50° and that is good. It adds a dynamic to the scene.
Oblique, Canted and Dutch Tilt
Dutch Tilt appears to have far better results than Angle. That's because tilt by itself has a certain meaning. With the exception of picture 3, all of them are slightly angled.
Oblique tilt gives even better results and turns all of them slightly to our needs.
Canted has disappointing results.
Adding "tilt" by itself works, also.
Summary and Takeaway
It seems that the words 'oblique', 'tilt', and 'oblique angle' are most effective. 'Canted' or 'Dutch' can be used, when you want the same picture with just a minor edit. Use the same seed and add it to the prompt to slightly alter the angle. But if you want to achieve an angle from the beginning, it is probably not the optimal way.
