Stroud is a hidden gem located in remote northeastern Iceland. I am quite sure that 98% of tourists that go to Iceland have never heard of this place, I had to dig quite deep into searching locations to find this to go. It was not even on google maps, until recently.
Storurd is mostly known by locals who like to hike this trail every year.
So basically it is an out and back trail, reaching 10km in total length. Starting from the mountain road you can park your car and start walking along a small path.
Originally we had planned to do this hike the previous day but this place was in clouds and I rendered this hike pointless to not see any views. On the next day, however, the weather is absolutely amazing. Sunny, calm wind, and relatively warm around 7C considering its fall and Iceland climate.
In every direction the views were amazing.
Hike to the Storurd lake is mostly uphill and sometimes steep. Also need to cross some streams.
During the walk, you can see some sheep roaming the area freely..
Can you see the pattern in the snow? It looks like a massive hole but I can't make it out if it's real or just an illusion.
Now we were at the summit of our trail. The bright blue/green Storurd lake is on another side and we need to do a steep decline to get down. The view was stunning and it dropped my jaw, literally. This place is so unique.
We got down there and flat grassland in the middle of very rugged terrain looks so cool.
We got close to the lake itself. The water comes from the small glacier-looking snowfield near the cliffs on the photo above.
Here I am, sitting on the lookout rock. At this moment I thought, I don't want to leave this place. I wanted to sit there all day long and just enjoy the wild nature in peace.
We did a short rugged circle around the area, climbing over rocks and several streams.
Now it was time to start going back along the same route we came from. On the photo below you can see a photo facing south. the area is quite high in altitude.
When we climbed to the summit of the rail again. It was another 5Km walk down, descending only.
Here you can see blueberries. Mountainsides are all full of these so you can forget yourself eating.
Soon enough we were back to the mountain road where we started from.
It is definitely the second highlight hike of my trip to Iceland and will stay in my memory forever. I love the fact that it is a hidden gem and almost no tourist knows about it. 90% of tourists even don't come to this area of Iceland due to its being far from the main road and no famous landmarks there. It is so underrated but I hope it stays this way.
