You tell the story with a boy whose self-esteem is damaged by traumas with his parents, despite which he is an intelligent child who finds in writing and reading an escape from his sadness. It's a good start to a story. I would have enjoyed more depth in the recovery of confidence. There are clear signs of that. I'm sure you've seen them... Good plot line overall, I hope you dwell more on the details.
