An Attack on Calm—An Allegorical Story

When we drive down a straight, flat road without potholes, or when we travel on a plane without turbulence, or on a boat gliding across a calm sea, we experience a sense of peace and tranquility. We say, “Everything was calm.”

This suggests, then, that calm could be described as the state in which human beings make their best decisions, solve complex problems, and stimulate creativity. But we all know that the story isn’t that simple, since there are many enemies always lying in wait, trying to rob us of that longed-for calm.

On this occasion, I’d like to share this story I wrote to depict an attack on calm—a story that invites reflection. I hope you enjoy it.

An Attack on Peace of Mind

An important meeting was convened in the depths of the human soul, attended by the basest of emotions. With his head hung low, Depression arrived, dragging his sandals and frowning; he was followed by Stress, biting his nails and scratching his head. Bad Temper stormed in, slamming the door behind him, escorted by Insomnia, Impatience, Anxiety, and Chaos. They all sat down at the table with a single purpose: to devise a strategy to put an end to the existence of Calm, whose mere presence prevented them from ruling.

The first to speak was Stress. With a loud thud on the table, he shouted:
“We have to suffocate her! Speed up her pulse, make her sweat like a runaway colt until she’s out of breath.”

Depression sighed from the back of the room, staring at her empty hands:
“There’s no point in running through swampy terrain. The best thing is to drain her will, freeze her horizon—make her feel so weighed down that she’d rather give up than get up.”

Bad Temper roared, spitting sparks:
“No mercy! We have to break things, scream, shake her until she loses her mind and becomes one of us.”

“We’ll make her lose her temper!” Chaos chimed in.

They plotted for hours: they drew up assault maps, recharged Insomnia’s batteries, and devised ambushes to wipe away that gentle smile that always disarmed them.

On the other side of the door, sitting comfortably in her armchair, Calma listened to everything. She wasn’t running, she wasn’t sweating, she wasn’t grinding her teeth. It wasn’t the silence of a cemetery, but the eye of the storm: where the wind roars, yet the center remains untouched.

Suddenly, the door swung wide open, and the mob poured out, ready to devour her. Calma rose slowly, looked them straight in the eye, her shoulders relaxed and her breathing deep. She didn’t raise her voice; she simply exhaled. In that single, measured heartbeat, Stress’s weapons snapped like dry stalks, the weight of Depression found firm ground to rest upon, and the fire of Bad Temper went out from lack of oxygen. Disarmed, they fled in terror.

Only one spectator remained at the far end of the room, watching from the shadows with a fixed, icy gaze: Negative Mind. He didn’t need to roar or scheme. After a few seconds of absolute silence, he turned around and walked away slowly.

Calm adjusted his posture in the armchair, aware that the real test was just beginning.
