One of the most dangerous diseases we are facing now is illiteracy. It might sound like a figure of speech but illiteracy is a disease eating up majority of the world's population today.
I'll give an example to paint a picture of how dangerous illiteracy is to the society.
Few months ago I was an intern in a hospital where I worked in the laboratory section. One faithful afternoon, a baby was rushed into the emergency room and I was sent to collect the baby's blood sample, while collecting the sample, I couldn't help notice how swollen the baby's stomach was. I did my job and came back to the lab only for my supervisor to tell me that the mother of the baby was told by her neighbours to apply toothpaste to the baby's umbilical cord for it to fall off quickly.
Lacking knowledge, she obliged and did this for days and apparently it fell off but the baby's stomach was swollen due to bacterial infections.
Funny thing is that she hid it, she refused to tell anyone about it killing the baby slowly, it was her mother-in-law after constant persuasions to see the baby that rushed the baby to the hospital when she finally saw him.
That baby would've been dead if they brought him an hour late and it's all because of his mom's illiteracy.
Illiteracy has led to more deaths than any disease in the world,the sooner we cure ourselves of it the better.
