For me, I think that Adam was tested and he failed the test. Look at it this way, God made everything in the garden including the fruit. Adam might not have noticed it but once there was a ban on the tree, I believed his curiosity sparked up that's why he fell quickly when he was offered the fruit.
I think that the act of making the tree forbidden was a test to Adam and Eve to see if they would pass it. Unfortunately they failed.
Think about it God made the heaven and the earth the tree inclusive and every animal in the garden. He's omnipotent but yet he wasn't there when the serpent decieved Eve then Adam Coincidence ? I think not.
So to answer your question, I believe Adam was forbidden to eat from the tree in order for him to be tested.
