Damat Ali Pasha commanded the Ottoman army against the Austrian army in the Battle of Petrovaradin back in 1716.
In that battle he was wounded and soon after that he died. He was buried in the Belgrade fortress at Kalemegdan.
his turbe was built over his grave in 1783. The commanders of the Belgrade fortress Selim Pasha in 1847 and Hasan Pasha in 1850 were later buried in it. It was damaged in the First Serbian Uprising (1804) and during the bombing of Belgrade in the First World War. After that, it was renovated both times, and the turbet got its present appearance in 1928.
