John and I went to check the east herd this morning, mostly just to see how Helena and her calf were getting along, and if anyone else was looking closer to calving.
All of the cows, including Helena, were laying in the shed; She had left her calf napping against the fence line of the other pen. While she could have easily re-joined him by walking down to the gate, she was too focused on threatening John, who was playing with her calf in an attempt to bait her out of the shed so we could get a good look at the others. About the time we decided it was in everyone's best interest to just let it go and come back later, we heard what sounded like a calf bawling ... but it wasn't coming from any of the ones we could see.
Leaving the pens, we hiked out to the field behind the barn. There we found a black, bull calf, laying in the tall brome. Not knowing quite where he came from, nor or how long he'd been out there, we expected him to be weak and planned on taking him home with us. As it turned out, he was actually quite large, plenty strong, and had no intentions of being carried willingly to the truck.
So, John tucked him back under the section of fence that looked like he likely crawled out from, and he went bouncing off to join his twin brother at Helena's side. Of all the cows to have two ... it had to be her. :/
Cows don't typically do well with twins, but neither one of us is in a hurry to go in and re-separate the trio. I guess we'll simply have to see how it goes.
