I recall when I was in college and I had political bumper stickers on my car during one particular election in the 90's. Some people would walk up to me and tell me they liked the stickers but the people who disagreed with me wouldn't try to rip them off or vandalize my car because of it. These days I think that they would but I don't have a car and have no intention of ever having one again so this isn't something I need to worry about.

In that same time period there was this girl I knew that her and her boyfriend were political polar opposites of me and we would have sometimes heated conversations with one another.... then we would hang out for the rest of the day and just agree to disagree. We wouldn't have these discussions in public nor would be attempt to call the others terrible things because at the end of it all, we were just good pals who disagreed about something trivial. These days when people put things into typed words in a public forum shit gets nasty really quick. I was there when people just disagreed and carried on with their lives, nowadays, it seems like if you aren't 100% on their side, you are by default an enemy.... and really, this is not the way anyone should live their lives.
