A friend of mine was recently looking at Malaysia as a place to live. I wasn't listening to everything that he said but there were very attractive options for people as far as long visas are concerned if they were willing to buy a house. but as you say, I think the goverment there is trying to put a band-aid on a gashing wound and if a bunch of foreigners came in and bought up a bunch of land, they would change the rule.
