Speaking in tongues has been in existence since the time of the Apostle.
What does it's really mean to speak in tongues?
According to the teachings of Bro. Eli Soriano speaking in tongues is speaking in other languages or tongues that is not your native tongue.we can see this i Act 2:7-8
Acts 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Speaking in tongues is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. You don't just say anything on your own, its when you are filled with the holy Spirit, Its gives you utterances according to Act 2:3-4
Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
You might not understand the language you are speaking because you will speak based on the leading of the holy Spirit and whoever the spirit is ministering to will understand.
1 Corinthians 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
The passage above indicates that we also have the gift of interpretation of tongues which is also inspired by the Holy Spirit meaning that someone else understands what the spirit is leading you to say and interpret it to the edification of the church.
Therefore i think speaking in tongues should be performed by the leading of the holy Spirit.
