16 November 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2923: a can full of kisses
When Mina moved to Kano for her new job, it was the first time she'd left her hometown where she'd grown and been all her life. The keke napeps hissed, the streets buzzed, and the people rushed past her like she didn’t exist. At night, in her small room with pale walls and a window that barely opened, she felt the weight of solitude more than ever. One weekend, while unpacking the last of the boxes she had brought from home, she found something strange tucked carefully between sweaters a small, silver tin can with a red ribbon tied around it. Her only sister, Maryam, had placed a sticker on the lid that read “Open only when you forget you’re loved.”
Mina laughed . "Typical Maryam" she said
Curiosity won. She opened the can and inside were dozens of folded paper slips, each sealed with a little lipstick kiss. A can full of kisses. She unfolded the first one: “Amina, you’re the bravest person I know.” The second“If today is heavy, rest. Tomorrow needs you too.” Another“No one shines like you. Not even the sun .”Mina sat on the bed, tears stinging her eyes, but warm ones the kind that come from remembering you matter to someone. Days passed. On mornings when she woke, exhausted from the grind, she’d pick one kiss from the can. On nights when loneliness overcame through her room, she’d pick two. Sometimes she’d read the same message over and over, letting the words melt into her heart. The can slowly became her anchor a small reminder that love travels farther than people think. Months later, when Maryam visited her in the city for the first time, she found the can displayed proudly on Mina’s shelf.“You actually kept it?” Maryam said. “Kept it?” Mina said. "I'd even forgot about it, i still havent read it". Mina said again , trying to sound tough, but Maryam just laughed knowing herr sister was a baby at heart.
