For anyone who knows sugar and it's effect to the health especially when taken overly would understand how harmful it is not to reduce sugar intake- well I guess we are used to the normal "reduce your sugar intake" by now. Especially when we consume lots of sweets, ice cream, cakes, carbonated drinks and all of the foods that contains added sweeteners.

When we eat healthy, a food comprising of good quality carbohydrates, our body tends to break down the carbohydrates into sugar which is available as glucose( the blood sugar)for the production of energy used for day to day activities and to maintain food health.

This is different from added sugar in our snacks, ice cream and other drinks that does not have much to contribute but mar health by causing health issues like diabetes, obesity and other nutritional disorders. So it is good to rather reduce much of the added sugar than that which we get from our normal diets.

Your body according to Intermountain Registered Dietitians does need carbohydrates, which are broken down into sugar in your body. This sugar is essential for your body to create energy to survive. However, it is not necessary to include sugary foods or added sugars in the diet in order for your body to make energy. A diet with adequate complex carbohydrates (from foods such as whole grains and legumes) as well as foods containing natural sugar (such as fruit and milk) will fulfill this role.

It is true that in order not to gain too much weight and stay in shape, we might be asked by our doctors to reduce and consume less carbohydrate and replace with more fruits and veggies, this is not a bad idea especially for the diabetic or obesed patients. But then this should nit be taken that the bidy does not need carbohydrates. As a matter of fact carbohydrate is important in our diets. We only owe it to ourselves to combine abd have a good and healthy diet.

Let's talk low blood sugar level.

The condition in which the body blood sugar (glucose) drops below normal is called hypoglyceamia. Signs of low blood sugar include hunger, trembling, heart racing, nausea, and sweating. Hypoglycemia is commonly linked with diabetes.

Hypoglycemia is different from hyperglycemia, which occurs when you have too much sugar in your bloodstream. Hypoglycemia can happen to people with diabetes if the body produces too much insulin - a hormone that breaks down sugar so that you can use it for energy.

Understanding how hypoglyceamia happens.

When we eat our daily meals comprising of pasta, bread, fruits, vegetables, milk etc. Our body tends to break them into various sugar molecules which one of these sugar molecules is glucose. This is absorbed by the cells but can not happen without the help of the insulin.

Now when glucose rises it signals to these cells known as beta cells produced in the pancreas behind the stomach to release insulin. It is then that the insulin helps to make the energy from the glucose available for the cell which in turn provides energy for the body to use.

This process lowers the level of glucose in the bloodstream and prevents it from reaching dangerously high levels. Hence, as the blood sugar level returns to normal, so does the secretion of insulin from your pancreas.

If then one has diabetes, the effects of insulin on the body are drastically diminished, either because the pancreas doesn't produce enough of it (type 1 diabetes) or because the cells are less responsive to it (type 2 diabetes). As a result, glucose tends to build up in the bloodstream and may reach dangerously high levels. To correct this problem, insulin or other drugs designed to lower blood sugar levels are administered.

If insulin relative to the amount of glucose in bloodstream is taken, it can now cause blood sugar level to drop too low, resulting in hypoglycemia.

But as for people who doesn鈥檛 have diabetes, hypoglycemia can happen if the body is unable to stabilize blood sugar levels. Hypoglycemia in people who don鈥檛 have diabetes is less common than hypoglycemia that occurs in people who have diabetes or related conditions.

Hence one should be aware of early signs to be able to treat it so that blood sugar can be at normal range.

Main symptoms.

  • sweating
  • dizziness
  • fatigue.

  • Others might include; Being pale, Feeling weak, Feeling hungry, A higher heart rate than usual, Blurred vision, Confusion, Convulsions, Loss of consciousness, and in extreme cases, coma.

This condition can also vary from mild to severe which is more reasons why when these symptoms are noticed patients should go to the doctor for a proper check up and test.

How is hypoglyceamia diagnosed

An instrument called the glucose meter for measuring the glucose is used to detect hypoglyceamia . Blood glucose level below 4.o mmol/L shows that such individual has hypoglyceamia. It is best to note that urine test can not be used to diagnose hypoglyceamia.

How to treat hypoglyceamia

  • Do well to eat enough carbohydrate as needed adequately for your body and as advised by the doctor so that you would not eat less or more than you are supposed to consume for blood sugar stability.

  • orange juices is another quick means the body gets glucose. So orange juice can be a good way of providing glucose for the body use.

  • foods should be stable with good and quality high protein, fibre and complex carbohydrates. It is okay to eat carbohydrate wholly that is with enough soluble fibre but less of the refined carbs.

  • It is rather advisable to have a healthy meal pattern. This can be done by not eating once at a time. Atleast small meal quantity at 2 hours to help keep blood sugar at good range.

  • Always make sure to report to the doctor so that necessary improvement can be recorded and adjustments can be made in diet intake.

Conclusion.

We must not scrap carbohydrate totally from our diet simply because we want to avoid getting over weight. The body needs enough of the sugar converted from the starch in carbs for glucose which is the only sugar in the blood stream transported to every part of the body for work.

In a situation where the body lacks overly too much it starts forcing itself to use the little that was stored fir emmergency thereby over working the body and this is what causes the symptoms aforementioned.

As we have known that hypoglyceamia is a diabetic related health condition, insulin should be taken according to the quantity needed and not to the extent that it reduce blood sugar from normal range to less. This is clearly detrimental and could complicate the diabetes that is already there.

Patients should endeavour to go for checkups and maintain proper diet therapy for fast, quick recovery and stable blood sugar.

Keep living healthy... be happy.
