This was our first human contact, aside from other sailors, that we've had on Adak Island. For 4-5 weeks, we were completely alone.
We had a not-so-good trip coming up to Adak Island, but we’re not complaining. We refilled the diesel tanks and were warmly welcomed by the locals. We spent the 4th of July playing BINGO with them, which was really fun as I won three times. I don't know how, but we won some food prizes, which was great! We then spent the rest of the night with the locals around a fire on the beach. When midnight came, they set off fireworks.
This is my first time in the US, and everything is so different. In New Zealand, nobody shoots at road signs, nor do we have shotgun shells lying on the road every 100 metres. Fireworks are banned except for two very restricted times a year. There’s a lot to take in. It was good to celebrate the 4th of July; it won’t be my last.
It might seem bright because it is, but the sun only sets at midnight so it's been tough to get used to the new time zone, I'm usually an early riser but keep sleeping in.
6-hour hike to Clam Lagoon forgot my SD card for the drone, so the photos did not they way I wanted them to. We did manage to see eagles and seals, beautiful sight to see them eat the fish.
