I was given the advice by the person who first introduced me to STEEM to just go ahead and convert SBDs to STEEM. There were supposed to be some instances where it was better to wait, but as time went by, and especially since HIVE was born, I've not found a practical use for holding HBD.

However, given the dual nature of HBDs, I can see why it's still around. If you can get the pump above $1, then you can make some short term gains. The rest of the time HIVE is less than HBD, getting paid out in it as the DAO does makes it worth $1.

So, in my mind, whether it ever was a stable coin, the idea that it can be bought and sold on the open market, and thus it's value fluctuate means it's not a stable coin in practice.

Therefore, the only reason for it to be around is that on the internal market, it's never less than $1, and so those being paid in it can always get $1 there.
