A friend of mine sent me this picture today and it got me to thinking. Could eating insects help to reduce world hunger? People have been eating bugs from ancient times. The bible records that John the baptist ate locusts and honey to survive. My question is, what was going through the mind of the first person who ever ate a bug?
Was it an accident and the person says, “hey that was’nt too bad. Hey Earle come try this.” Or maybe a litte toddler got caught eating a bug and the mom decides to taste it too. Or maybe some bugs got into the stew and grandmaw decided not to tell. “What’s your secret grandmaw?” “Oh, I’ll never tell.”
Edible insects are a good source of protien. If you have ever seen a survival show on television I am sure you have seen someone eat a bug. Andrew Zimmern has made a lot of money eatings bugs on his show, Bizzare Foods. Steemit has people from all over the world and I am sure some of them have eaten bugs. It may have even been you. If you have eat bugs please leave a comment and tell us about it.
In 2013 there was a report by the UN stating that eating insects could help with the problem of world hunger. Countries were encouraged to start farming insects like worms, cicadas, beetles, grasshoppers and other insects. The biggest problem is getting people to accept the idea.
I have seen some chocolate coverd ants at the county fair and I have seen some protien powder that was made from worm-meal but I have never purposely eaten an insect. I don’t know if I would be able to choke down one of those big fried grubs like you see on Bizarre Foods. I did watch my little sister eat a dead tarantula when we were kids. It did not look very appealing.
I am very curious to know if any of my Steemit readers eat bugs on a regular basis and like it. I love to hear about different cultural foods and if you have a special recipe please share. My only experience with eating bugs was probably like this pic of the guy on the motorcycle. I must admit though, If I was on an great adventure and hungy, I could probably eat an ant, but I dont know about a grasshopper.
So lets hear it. Will eating insects cure world hunger? Do you eat bugs?
