The All saints Academy's Inter house sports day was in two months time, and preparation has already began. I was in Jss2 and it was my first time participating.
I was chosen to lead the danger house(Red house) in an egg race and 100meter race. In most cases, we take second position.

The prize is huge and also very encouraging besides the trophy and the medal.
There are also beautifully wrapped gifts for the winners. I have been craving for it.

I was given two roles to play because most of the students do not participate in sports but were part of the house.
We call them benchers, as they are responsible for cheering up the participating students while some are in the medical team.

There were about six houses (purple, yellow, green, blue, orange and red houses) participating in all the sports.

My best friend Jennifer was in yellow house, our major competitor. She is good at egg race because she maintains a near perfect balance while racing with the egg.

During break-time I sat at the seat out outside my class munching on my potato chip and sipping my cold zobo. walking towards me was Jennifer "Ann,how far? I am fine, i replied. She sat down close to me, while enjoying her snacks. she told me she has been chosen again for egg race this time, soon I will be named Queen of egg race, she quipped. Looking at her, I said "I have been chosen to represents the house in egg race and hundred meter race" we both laughed aloud.

In my mind, all I was thinking was how to beat the queen of egg race. I know I need to practice very hard to achieve this feat.

One week to the inter house sports day, a pre-egg race was organised within the danger house(red) to assess our level of preparedness. I did so well that for a moment, I was imagining myself as the winner already with the trophy, medal along side that beautifully wrapped gift.

The d-day is fast approaching and now I am beginning to see my friend as a stumbling block to my dream. The funny thing is that she is so certain to win and doesn't acknowledge me as a competitor. So we talk normal as usual, not even about the egg race.

And now the day I have been waiting for, I woke up as early as 6:00am, excited and at the same time having sad feelings馃槬 what's this feeling that I am having hmm... hope is not sports phobia or the fear of losing to the queen of egg race. I told my Dad I wasn't feeling so confident enough even though I am excited. He encouraged me and promised to come with me to cheer me up. My face was brightened and I felt like a winner already. I hurriedly got ready (ate and dressed up) it was to begin @9:00am,we were told to be in school @8:30am for a refreshed brief rehearsal. I got to the school field, every where looks beautiful, the race lanes were drawn, the starting and the finishing point was written Boldly on a plain white cloth and raised up by two long sticks planted into the ground, every letter in different colours. Students were in their different colours of sport wears with the names of the house written at the back, the judges' seats were arranged nicely, all setting looking colourful and beautiful.

I walked in straight to my coach for the rehearsal, afterwards we went into the field, I was scanning for my bestie but she was nowhere to be found at 8:56am the judges were all set and everything was set except the spoons used in conveying the egg was missing, a boy named Christopher whose mum sells food close to the school ran to his mother and got six spoons.

It was time, it began with an opening prayer, introduction and some speeches. The 100meters began at the sound of the whistle and yet again yellow house took the glory and I came second, I wasn't really feeling bad anyways it was my first time participating during inter house sport days. Next it was the four by hundred meter relay(4x100m), again yellow house took the glory and danger house took the third position.

My heart began to pant as it was time for the egg race. Standing at the starting line on my lane, my eyes were in search for Jennifer but she wasn't here. Someone else from her house was on her lane, I was surprised and was guessing what was wrong with her? What is going on? I didn't understand. While I was still in my thoughts and in search for Jennifer the whistle was blown, so...we are to pick the egg with the spoon from the bowl of egg in the colour of your house to about 10meters where the same kind of bowl is placed, in each bowl there was six eggs each, we are to successfully take the eggs to the other bowl without it falling down, the first to finish this task becomes the winner, the race began there was a lot of cheering, yellow house lost two eggs on the way, green house lost all, blue house lost four, orange house lost one, purple house lost two and I made it all six intact successfully placed in the second bowl, I shouted and jumped on my dad, I was so excited.

Other games took place and it came to an end. It was time for the judges to do justice to the award, I was called up for my award,I received it with so much excitement. We ended with a closing remark and prayers.

Afterwards I asked Jennifer's coach about her whereabout and she said Jennifer had just lost her father in the early hours of the morning, whaattt? I screamed in shock, what happened to him? I asked, she said he slump and died in the bathroom while taking his bath. What a tragedy! I told my Dad and he said we will visit her the following day.
On getting home the news of my victory has filled my neighbourhood, I showed my neighbours my gift and they congratulated me.

My wild imagination of what was in the beautifully wrapped gift came to an end as I unveiled the coveted gift. Lo and behold it was a mathematical set, calculators, four pieces of sixty leaves notebook and a pair of socks.

This is my entry as regards to inkwell@inkwell may contest.
