Children are to be taught the way of God. To train involves teaching, instruction and counselling. The parents have a duty to instruct a child using the Bible as a text book. The words planted into a child's heart will be guide through to old age.
"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. - Proverb 22:6 NIV
Teach the children by exemplary living. The first picture that the children sees in life is that of the father and mother. What they do and don't do goes a long way to influence their lives on earth here. It can be positively or negatively. The child brain is like a notebook that what ever she sees or heard is written down.
"Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. He served and worshiped Baal and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father had done." - 1 Kings 22:51-53 NIV
From the scripture above you will notice that Ahaziah live according to the footsteps of his father. There is a popular saying in where I am from that a goat can't give birth to a hen instead it will give birth to a goat too. We should be careful what we do and say in the present of our kids.
Correction. The way to really show love to a child is to correct him when he does wrong. Note correction can be in different form and it should be done in love. Refusal to discipline your child is setting up disgrace for you tomorrow.
"Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die." - Proverb 23:13 NIV
Provoking not the child. We should not be high handed on the child. We shouldn't by our omission or commission make the children to become wicked.
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." - Ephesians 6:4 NIV
We should provide for the needs of the child as parent or guardian that is your sole responsibility. Food care, academic care, clothing and lot more.
"Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." - Timothy 5:8
