A deciduous tree belonging to the Moraceae family, with a spreading habit and broad crown. The large, deeply lobed leaves are rich in secretory canals that produce a characteristic white latex. The plant prefers temperate and Mediterranean climates, with a minimum tolerated temperature of -5°C, above which it can suffer damage to young branches.

The balsamic period varies depending on the organ:
June → Harvest of the latex, rich in proteolytic enzymes.
September → Ripening of the sweet and sugary fruits (sycones).
Toxicity and Precautions
Toxicity is low, but the latex can cause skin irritation, and the fruits, if consumed in excess, can cause gastrointestinal disorders.
Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Fresh latex may be photosensitizing due to the presence of furocoumarins (psoralens).
Active Ingredients
Enzymes: amylase, protease (ficin), lipase
Carbohydrates: fructose, glucose
Vitamins: A, B1, B2, C
Minerals: potassium, calcium, magnesium
Minor phytochemicals: coumarins, triterpenes, mucilage
Ficin, a protease similar to papain, is responsible for the curdling action and part of the digestive activity.
Beneficial properties
Digestive: stimulates gastric secretion and promotes protein digestion.
Mild osmotic laxative (dried fruits).
Emollient (mucilage).
Vegetable curdling agent (latex).
Functional food: rich in easily assimilated minerals and sugars.
Confirmed activities
Food (fresh and dried fruits).
Vegetable curdling agent (latex), traditionally used in the production of artisanal cheeses.
Bud extract
Recipe: 12.5 g of fresh buds macerated for 21 days in 100 ml of glycerine solution (50 ml glycerol, 35 ml 96% alcohol, 15 ml water).
Shelf life: 3 years.
Dosage: 60 drops/day.
Indications: dyspepsia, nervous gastritis, gastrointestinal somatizations.
Fresh latex
Used as a curdling agent in the production of Apulian pampanella.
Traditionally also used to remove small warts (popular use, not recommended due to the risk of irritation).
Fruits
Eat fresh or dried as an energy-boosting and remineralizing food.
Dried fruits contain up to 60–70% sugars.
Each Ficus species has a specific Hymenopteran pollinator (obligate mutualism).
Growing a species outside its natural range results in a sterile plant, as the pollinator is absent.
Ficus carica is one of the few species in the genus that can produce fruit even without pollination (parthenocarpy), a characteristic that has favored its spread throughout the Mediterranean.
Varieties are divided into:
Uniferous (a single fruiting)
Biverous (large flowers in June, figs in September)

Il periodo balsamico varia in base all’organo:
Controindicato in gravidanza e allattamento.
Principi attivi
Enzimi: amilasi, proteasi (ficina), lipasi
Glucidi: fruttosio, glucosio
Vitamine: A, B1, B2, C
Minerali: potassio, calcio, magnesio
Fitochimici minori: cumarine, triterpeni, mucillagini
Lassativo osmotico leggero (frutti secchi).
Emolliente (mucillagini).
Cagliante vegetale (latice).
Alimento funzionale: ricco di minerali e zuccheri facilmente assimilabili.
Attività confermate
Alimento (frutti freschi e secchi).
Gemmoderivato
Ricetta: 12,5 g di gemme fresche macerate 21 giorni in 100 ml di soluzione glicerica (50 ml glicerolo, 35 ml alcol 96°, 15 ml acqua).
Conservazione: 3 anni.
Posologia: 60 gocce/die.
Indicazioni: dispepsia, gastrite nervosa, somatizzazioni gastroenteriche.
Latice fresco
Frutti
Consumati freschi o essiccati come alimento energetico e remineralizzante.
Bifere (fioroni in giugno, fichi in settembre)
