Sunday, September 3rd. I woke up and ran to execute my ritual of all my dawns; prepare coffee.
From my balcony, the sun is shining and promises a hot day, a day that will force me to stay indoors.
Laziness had me subdued and to get rid of it I needed my dark and robust coffee. He is the one who is in charge of giving me the power to fight for justice. Yes, I am a superhero.
I checked my blog, and I came across a question that has left me thoughtful:
Would you rather drink instant coffee for the rest of your life or face one of your greatest fears?
When I lived in Medellin I tasted Colombian coffee, which for me was a blessing. My girlfriend, every morning, would surprise me in bed with a good cup of dark coffee and a big sphere of beignet. Those dawns were of extreme happiness. She worked in a state institution and always left before me to go to work.
Until one day that changed.
For some reason I can't remember, We started waking up late and she was getting up at full speed to make coffee, get dressed, and leave for work.
But that wasn't the only weird thing going on.
Coffee no longer tasted the same.
Since we were getting up late, I offered to make coffee in the morning so that she could prepare her things with less fuss.
She told me that it was not necessary, that she had bought instant coffee, and that she prepared it quickly.
My alarm bells immediately went off.
Weeks ago, while browsing the news, I came across an article that caught my attention. It went something like this:
"A new study reveals that instant coffee can have harmful health effects. According to researchers, regular consumption of this type of coffee can cause heart and nerve problems, as well as increase the risk of cancer. Experts recommend avoiding instant coffee and opting for natural coffee, which has antioxidant and beneficial properties for the organism."
I felt a shiver as I heard my girlfriend say she was giving me instant coffee.
When she left for work, I looked in the places where the coffee is stored in the kitchen and got rid of the instant coffee. Then I ran to the supermarket and bought tons of regular coffee, the kind I like and love.
In the evening, when we were both at home, I told my girlfriend that starting the next day, she would not prepare the coffee, that I would take care of it and I would even make her a nice breakfast with fried eggs, arepas, butter, jam and cheese.
She was incredulous but accepted by giving me a nice kiss. I liked that part very much.
I remembered one of my greatest fears: waking up too early in the morning. Since I was a child, I was terrified of getting up before everyone else, I felt that the house was full of shadows, and I didn't want to face them. I lived like that until I was an adult, even living with my girlfriend.
For that reason, I had always avoided facing that fear and had given up getting up first in the mornings.
So, from that moment on, I overcame my phobia of getting up early thanks to the fact that I was not going to drink instant coffee anymore and I was not going to let my girlfriend go out to work in a state of anguish or all random. I saved our health, and our sunrises were rich.
We must be brave, face our fears, and care for help, and love our partners.
Well, you know my answer to the question posed.
