English
Most of us were taught in our homes to be polite from a young age. The purpose of this was to form respectful relationships with others.
Being kind opens doors, and connects us with other kind people, thus creating a harmonious, healthy, and well-being community. But in many cases, being kind is considered weak, and foolish. Of one thing I am convinced, to be kind is to be intelligent. The brute does not know about kindness because of his condition.
Society is a whirlwind that whirls us and carries us along, often for the better, and sometimes for the worse. Society is full of many rules that can contribute to good living, but in some circumstances, they fail.
Some think, and religions impose it, that we should offer the other cheek when we have already been hit. It seems to me an absurdity. It is not that I agree with revenge or resentment. But turning the other cheek is not my thing. If someone assaults me, they should be punished because I am a person who respects and that should be a two-way street. Feedback.
It is not wrong to be kind, but the demand for it or respect must accompany kindness. If I show you my teeth with a smile, I don't expect you to show me your teeth to bite me.
When I was young, many moons ago, my aunt Mercedes asked what I would do with my first salary. I answered that I wanted to give a gift to my parents, and my siblings, to buy food for the household as a way of contributing and rewarding what they invested in me. My aunt responded with a "ya va!", and further back came some questions: Who was the one who worked, who earned the money for his skills and knowledge?
I was left with a face like a punching bag, I didn't understand what he was getting at. I knew the answer was undoubtedly me, but I didn't know the reason for not saying it. She, seeing my face and hearing no answer, told me that everyone who worked, who earned his money, must reward himself for the effort, he should be kind to himself. She added that I should take my money and buy myself a pair of socks as a small reward.
That aunt was great or is great because she made me understand, she had to be nice to me. I could make my budget, fulfill my obligations, and give gifts, but the priority was me for doing things right.
Not everything goes right, there are times when we make mistakes, and in some, the mistakes are ugly. The times that have happened to me, that I have realized or that I have been made aware of, I have been relentless with myself. I've even told myself how badly I'm going to die.
In those moments I have not been kind to this guy and by reprimanding me I am demanding more of myself to do things right. It's part of the education I received. But it is not good. We must be understanding, see the faults, and try to solve them. If we failed in something it is because we did not train as we should have, or we did not have the intention to do things with heart, because of total negligence. This should not happen. Responsibility is first and foremost in all aspects.
We must always keep in mind our strengths and even more our weaknesses. By doing so, we are accepting ourselves, we are showing that we know ourselves. We are individuals, we are unique. We should not compare ourselves with another being.
We must be grateful and appreciate what we have, and what happens to us and this gratitude must also be exported to others. To those who help us, who care about us.
I am very restless and easily distracted. This leads me to the fact that meditation is not my forte. But I have found times when I have been able to practice it and the result has been quite satisfactory. Through meditation I enter into a conversation with myself where I forgive myself, I thank myself, I congratulate myself, I love myself.
Knowing how to say "no" is important. It is respecting our limits and priorities, and not accepting compromises that harm us. We must treat each other as we would treat a friend. Being understanding, and generous. When we are kind to ourselves, we show interest and respect, just as we would to another person.
Being kind to ourselves will bring us happiness, health, and love and, for sure, we will emanate to others a brightness that will make them smile and value us. Let us not fall into the whirlwind of today's world. There should always be time for ourselves, to talk to our inner self and get good results.
