The best of roses bloom between light and shadows. The best of love stories are woven around a dark buggy villain and a fairy princess. The best of histories are unveiled under the shadowy auspices of the moon, so that the silent whispers of the Moon-Light emits more glory than the most radiant rays of the sun.

Hannah is drifting in and out of sleep on the sofa, tossing like the sea’s wave, conjuring memories of last night’s quarrel with Tobi and calling it a dream. She evokes a mirror image of Tobi, glancing at the full moon staring at him from the window, with his face contorted into a frenzy of frantic unhappiness. She replays the snappy words they exchanged, in a skewed, warped manner,

‘…what are you doing...shutting me out with the noise of the TV?

‘What’s left to do since you now prefer those creepy things to me?’
‘Things?...’

‘…I hate insects, there; I have said it, that’s the one thing I hate. I hate their creepy ugliness and dark surreptitious miseries… I love beauty, but…’

‘How can you call them things, they are my friends…’

‘…I have been there, I know how it…’

‘…Face it, Tobi, you are living a deluded life, you pretend the world is all great and beautiful. No, it’s not. It’s hell…rape, murder, prejudice…’

‘If only you knew where…’

‘…I wish to God you would open your eyes and see in the world what really is…’
‘If nothing else, I see you...’

A crackling sound startles Hannah out of her dreamy sleep. She rubs her eyes with the back of her palms and touches her forehead, they are feverish. She makes a mental note to take a cold shower before going back to sleep. For now, she just wants to appease her hungry stomach. She has barely taken a step when her nose awakens to a pungent burning smell invading her space. She moves around and finds the smell is coming from outside. Gently, she moves to the door; the more steps she takes, the more she is able to define the smell- salt and manure, roasted decays, ashes drowned in blood and sweat…
She opens the door, only to see a wasted heap of dark solid ashes on her patio and a white envelope lying next to the heap. The smell is horrible, but she manages to take the note before hurriedly shutting the door.
Her curiosity causes her to unearth the message while standing.
It’s a poem.

I bathed in the illusions of your phantasms,
Till my eyes told tales and invited agreeable revolters.
Together, we shed scaly skins and spun Darkness into flesh,
We came to the Outside to fill our hollow hearts with Light,
But alas! We were merely broken cisterns that hold no water.
Tobias

Hannah cannot make sense of what she reads. She swallows hard, hoping her dry wetness will clear her bewildered confusion. When it doesn’t, she goes around her space, searching frantically for Tobi. She screams his name into the dawn, disheveling her hair in the process. She hobbles to the front door, holding her heart in her hands, wondering for how long before it slips to the ground and shatters. When she steps out into the patio, she finds that the ashes have been mindlessly scattered by the wind in his playful gait.
This is when her heart slips to the ground.
She stretches herself on the ground, feeling betrayed, cursing herself for letting her heart love something too strange to be true. She doesn’t know what in the world had happened, but she knows Tobi betrayed her in a most unforgiveable manner. She cannot hate him, she can only hope he will come back and love her again. Right there on the patio, she shuts her eyes and sleeps tearfully.
Somehow, she manages not to remember anything about how Tobi kissed her hair and said he was going to the moon, the place for people with no homes; how he said he was never coming back; how he, before storming out, made sure to tell her she was wrong, that as long as the sun is still hovering the face of the sky, Earth is still a beautiful place…
