I made an interesting trip in July to Utila, one of the Bay Islands of Honduras which is about 30 Kms from where I live. To get there, the easiest way is to take the ferry, costs about $30.00 one way and it takes about 40 minutes. I left on the afternoon one, and the sea was rough, while getting out of the harbor for a few seconds I thought we would capsize. But it was fun actually, except for those who were near the railings they got wet from the waves.
I actually lived on this island in the seventies and boy it has changed, a lot more people, a lot of hotels and on the main street which is over a kilometer every house has some sort of business. The streets are all paved, but there are no sidewalks so you have to be careful because there are all sorts of vehicles moving, golf carts, quads, motorcycles, bikes even a few cars and over 50 tuk tuk taxis, Back in the seventies there were two cars a couple of motorcycles and a few bikes, no paved streets and many locals used to go around bare foot.
The place has developed, it is a tourist spot now, undoubtedly the place is better, more modern but I think I liked it better before. Anyway here are some photos I took with my phone.
Baseball field, these guys used to have the best baseball in Honduras.
Football Stadium
There are a lot of diving schools there, supposedly one of the cheapest places to get a PADI divers license in the world. It is also quite well known because you can actually get to see whale sharks there.
Of course there are small, beautiful beaches all around the island, somehow swimming is one thing that has never interested me. The people here are bilingual, English and Spanish with their own unique accent.
