One of my favorite bands are the Beatles, I think I've said it here before. But when it comes to choosing a song, the dilemma begins. Even more so when it comes to learning to play it on guitar or to sing it. The voices of each of the members are very particular and for example in the case of Paul McCartney, his intonation is almost impossible for me to achieve in the song that I share with you today and that I'm sure you must have recognized just by the cover.

If you have not identified it, it is Blackbird, composed by Paul himself and included in the White Album, from 1968. I definitely owe this song to myself many years ago and finally in the last few days I have practiced it enough to be able to upload an acoustic version. It's not a perfect rendition, in fact I admit it has some little mistakes, but what's perfect in life? 😉.

This song conveys that spirit of overcoming difficulties, to swim even when the current is against us, to believe in the powerful essence of our spirit to move forward. That's why I want to give it to myself today, July 5, my birthday. I owe the voice to you. I tried to record myself several times and none of the versions were acceptable. Especially the part where Paul comes up with the Into the light of the dark black night, I never reach that note 😂.

Un autorregalo en mi cumpleaños

Una de mis bandas favoritas son los Beatles, creo que ya lo he dicho por acá antes. Pero cuando se trata de elegir una canción, comienza el dilema. Más aún si se trata de aprender a tocarla para guitarra o a cantarla. Las voces de cada uno de los integrantes son muy particulares y por ejemplo en el caso de Paul McCartney, su afinación me resulta casi imposible de lograr en la canción que hoy les comparto y que de seguro deben haber reconocido solo por la portada.

Si no la has identificado, pues te comento que se trata de Blackbird, compuesta por el propio Paul e incluida en el Álbum Blanco, de 1968. Definitivamente esta canción me la debo hace muchos años y finalmente en los últimos días la he practicado bastante como para poder subir una versión acústica. No es una interpretación perfecta, de hecho reconozco que tiene errorcillos, pero ¿qué es perfecto en la vida? 😉.

Esta canción transmite ese espíritu de sobreponerse a las dificultades, a nadar aun cuando la corriente está en nuestra contra, a creer en la esencia poderosa de nuestro espíritu para salir adelante. Por eso me la quiero autorregalar hoy 5 de julio, día de mi cumpleaños. La voz se las debo. Intenté grabarme varias veces y ninguna de las versiones estaba aceptable. Sobre todo, en la parte en que Paul sube con el Into the light of the dark black night, a esa nota no llego jamás 😂.

Creative Process

The cover image was created with Adobe Illustrator 2023 using another image from reference. I used the pen and brush tools to create the lines and details seen in the blackbird's body. Then with the text tool I wrote the first verses of the song. To give color I used the page coolors.co with one of their palette recommendations.

La imagen de portada fue creada con Adobe Illustrator 2023 utilizando otra de referencia. > Empleé las herramientas pluma y pinceles para crear las líneas y los detalles que se observan en el cuerpo del mirlo. Luego con la herramienta texto escribí los primeros versos de la canción. Para dar color utilicé la página coolors.co con una de sus recomendaciones de paletas.

I must say that I really liked the final result, and although quite simple as the song, it transmits me that idea that beauty can be found in simple things. Then I set the task of recording myself playing the guitar and that was an odyssey because in my house at all hours there is noise 😵. I tried even in the early morning and there was always a car or two passing by.

With the voice recorder of my cell phone I took one of the many versions played in one go and loaded it in the mobile video editing application InShot, placed the image created in Illustrator and started adding the subtitles of the song in karaoke style. I don't know why when exporting, the program altered a bit the transition between subtitles, but well, in future versions I hope to edit with a PC program that is more powerful than InShot.

Finally, I added to the guitar recording some effects of little birds singing, just like in the original song. For this, I searched in youtube for some free sound and downloaded the one I quoted. Debo decir que me gustó mucho el resultado final, y aunque bastante sencillo como la canción, me transmite esa idea de que la belleza se puede encontrar en cosas simples. Luego me di a la tarea de grabarme tocando la guitarra y eso fue una odisea porque en mi casa a todas horas hay ruido 😵. Lo intenté incluso por la madrugada y siempre pasaba algún que otro carro.

Con la grabadora de voz de mi celular tomé una de las tantas versiones salidas tocadas de un tirón y la cargué en la aplicación de edición de videos móvil InShot, coloqué la imagen creada en Illustrator y comencé a añadir los subtítulos de la canción al estilo karaoke. No sé por qué a la hora de exportar, el programa me alteró un poco la transición entre los subtítulos, pero bueno, en versiones futuras espero editar con un programa de PC que sea más potente que InShot.

Por último, añadí a la grabación de la guitarra unos efectos de pajarillos cantando, al igual que en la canción original. Para ello, busqué en youtube algún sonido libre de derechos de autor y descargué ese que cité.
