I'll be honest, I'm a rather shy person in real life; I'd go as far as saying I'm not very peopley - Not that I don't like them per se, I just don't get them sometimes and definitely don't have the need to be surrounded by a lot of people. This doesn't mean I'm not social of course, just that I pick and choose my social situations carefully.

I work with and manage people at the office and work with clients from all walks of life and due to the figurative suit of armour my job-function provides I'm able to do it well, professionally and with no hint of any shyness at all - In fact, if you asked my clients or colleagues they would laugh at you for suggesting I was shy. But shy I am.

I'm somewhat introverted I guess - Meaning I don't need the stimulus provided by others to feel happy, content or to enjoy myself. Give me some cookies, a book and some coffee and I'm set...Lego building, hunting, hiking, kayaking...All things I love and am happy to do alone or with my wife Faith amongst others...Being surrounded by a lot random people, even those I know...I don't love it.

Anyway, in complete contrast to what you read above I've always wanted to go to HiveFest which has been held in various locations around the world for several years albeit under a slightly different name; I've never been in a position to attend unfortunately.

This year a VirtualReality HiveFest is being held due to the pandemic so going is a simple matter of having an internet connection and a computer. Oh, and some VR goggles I guess, although there is a 2D option also. You can find out some more information here if you like.

From the hivefe.st website.

I think it would be cool to meet some of the people I interact with on a daily basis in person, but in this VR environment? I wasn't so sure so I didn't register when I first heard about it.

I suppose firstly because I'm not great with computers, know nothing about VR goggles except they are costly and it'll all kick off around 0330 (3:30am) my time so, really early. Also, I'm not sure how conducive the VR environment will be to social interaction - Will it make what I feel is awkward already, more awkward?

However...Prompted by azircon@azircon today I decided to register, have downloaded AltSpaceVR and set up my avatar-creature which looks at least a little like me. I'm kind of nervous about it all, but you know what they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained? OK, I'll be truthful here, I'm more than a little nervous about the whole thing, the VR nature of it mostly but I jumped in as I figure it's a great way to listen to some great speakers, some of the hive-leaders I guess one could say, and who know, maybe I even fit in a little with some of the others?

Free until the 7th of December

One of the main things that got me to register, besides the very persuasive azircon was the fact I could do so free of charge which is always better than paying right? It doesn't get any cheaper than free so I guess the planets aligned and the old G-dog had no more excuses.

It was all pretty easy; I went to the HiveFest web page put in my user name and an email address and that was pretty much it. Of course, I had to do the AltSpaceVR thing but it was pretty straight forward. I'm not doing the goggles so I just selected the 2D set up.

I have heard nothing but great things about HiveFest from those who have attended the live events in the past and I really badly want to go to one, however it's just not possible this year so the VR option is all we have...It's better than nothing right? And, if the old analogue G-dog can get it sorted then anyone can! Don't delay though, there's only a couple days to get yourself registered for free.

So, I'm sticking my neck out, virtually, and maybe I'll see you there...I'll be the one in the virtual corner, with a virtual drink, virtually minding my own business and trying not to die of shyness. Come and say hello.
