Do not trust the cheering, for those persons would shout as much if you or I were going to be hanged.
- Oliver Cromwell -
Despite the Oliver Cromwell quote above, this post is not about the swinging from the gallows by a rope around the neck sorting of hanging, as fun as that can be. No, it's a post about me hanging something else all together.
Every time I go to France I visit Paris because I love it. Yes it has its challenges, but I find it to be relaxing, vibrant, cultured, full of history and lovely (mostly) people - The food too, amazing. I'm drawn there and each time I leave reluctantly...but I leave with a piece of it every time, beautiful memories and other things.
On my last trip I returned with some artwork; I had also visited Italy and purchased some there also, from Firenze, (Florence), and it felt like (physically) bringing a small part of those places I love home with me. I've recently moved houses and despite being organised and hard working (mostly) I'm yet to finish off the new place. Over the last few weeks I've been busy hanging my artworks from overseas and my father's large acrylic on canvas works as well - He was a celebrated artist who made his living from his passion and creative vision.
In this image you can see seven black and whites from Paris which depict scenes I have come to love.
Among them, are cobbled streets, the Champs-Élysées, bridges, La Tour Eiffel of course, including my favourites which are two cats sitting close together looking at the Eiffel Tower across the roof-tops and a view of it from a room looking out through French windows.
I've hung them in the long hallway which was a little problematic as I'm a little OCD and getting them precisely spaced to each other and to the wall-space and all hanging at exactly the same height from the ceiling cornice was of high priority. I managed it though, using geometry, calculus, trigonometry, algebra and...well, not really. I made some calculations and measurements though, used a laser level that projects a line onto the wall and, after checking and rechecking my measurements banged some hooks into the desired locations and on went the artworks. I am really pleased with how it looks.
Travelling the world has opened me to so many benefits and opportunities and it's amazing how a memory of them can make me feel. Bringing a physical part of the places I've been, these artworks for instance, extends the value I've gained and deepens the experiences...it also keeps me on-point and working towards my next trip, and the one after that.
Do you hang art or photographs in your house? If you do, what and why? What memories do you hang on your walls and have framed on tables, counters and benchtops? Feel free to comment and let me know, or simply comment on anything you like, I'll always respond.
