It's a cold and wet Saturday night here...Although I'm inside so its warm and dry...Outside it's cold and wet though. Anyway, I'm half way through my weekend which I outlined earlier in the week here. It's been ok; Shooting at the range, cleaning guns, a few little chores around the house and then I made home made pizza and garlic bread for dinner tonight. It was good, and there's leftovers so, breakfast is sorted. original im src
I'm going hiking in the morning, a fairly long hike in which I plan to do some map and compass navigation just to keep those skills sharp and for fun. I'm off to a pine forest in the hills where the terrain is steep, forest is fairly dense once one is in deep and I'll not see anyone else. I'm leaving at 0600 for the drive up there and should be hiking/navigating by 0700 with the intention to finish mid-afternoon or so.
I'm looking forward to it, despite the cold and rainy conditions...I hope it's not windy though; I lost a map to the wind back a few years. It wasn't my most brilliant of moments in life I can assure you but is a good story I'll tell someday.
I was supposed to go to a pub tomorrow as a friend wanted a side-kick for a work function. I said maybe which she took to be a solid yes and she messaged to confirm tonight. I hate those sorts of places mostly: Too noisy, too crowded, too many wankers talking about themselves because they lack self esteem and...I just hate them. So I arranged the hiking day instead.
Anyway, here's a text message exchange from tonight.
She starts off with an insult - Basically calling me an old bastard because she questioned if I was even awake at just before 2200 on a Saturday night. Then proceeds to call me grumpy before finally getting to the point. In her defence, sometimes I do get an earlier night, like on nights before a big hike like I'm doing tomorrow - So maybe it was justified. Ok, I know she didn't mean it that way, I'm just messing around. I responded with hesitation about going to the event with her tomorrow and things went south.
I feel a little bad for reneging on this event, a stupid work function or something, but I just hate those things so much. Besides, the people there are those types who stand around talking about how much money they have in the bank and what brand name fashion label clothing they wear; you know, how much their hand bag cost or how fast their Mercedes Benz is. Not my type of people. My friend was not impressed.
Go somewhere else? I'm not sure what that's all about. It's a work function that she pretty much has to attend. The whole thing of me going was so she didn't have to go alone. That's why I feel guilty and all, but not enough to actually go!
The last time she came hiking with me she whined the whole time. Are we done yet? Where are we even going? Do you remember the way back? I think I just saw a bear. I'm hungry. I'm thirsty. My leg hurts. My feet hurt. I wore the wrong bra for this. Then she twisted her ankle and we had to end the hike half way through and I half carried-half dragged her back to the truck. Nope, she's not coming this time.
The other person I refer to in that message above is a fellow I have known for a few years who acted in a manner unbecoming several years ago in a particular circumstance and I don't forget things like that. Hence my reaction. I don't rely on karma, rather my own actions, but in truth I'll gain little by taking action, nor will it change what he did. But best I don't see him you know?
I genuinely laughed at this. She doesn't hate me, or will not for too long I'd say. I feel bad not going as she's a bit like me, shy in social situations, and even though they're work people she'll feel a bit left out. I almost caved and said I'd go...Almost but didn't.
See? She came to her senses and retracted the hate comment. She had another try at convincing me but even adding multiple N's couldn't sway me. I'm a rock when I want to be. She resorted to more insults and that's about it I guess. The end.
I don't like going to social events at my own workplace, formal awards nights or even internal things. I actually have to go to a bowling night in a couple weeks, pizzas after. All paid for by the company and all. Heinous!
I'm a fairly shy person socially. I am a riot when comfortable, let my hair down and have a good time, but I only do so when comfortable with the people around me. When it comes to things like my friend wants me to go to tomorrow I just feel out of place especially if the crowd is so self-absorbed as I know that crowd to be through the nature of that industry and previous experiences. Wankers. It's just not my thing - And it was a fairly easy choice between that and hiking.
My friend will be mad with me for a while and I'm ok with that. In truth she'll probably get there tomorrow and after an hour think to herself, thank god G didn't come, he would have hated it. And she'd be right. And I'll be off hiking!
How about y'all? Have you ever had a similar thing happen?; had to go somewhere you didn't want to and cancelled out? Or did you go and hate it so much that you vowed to never do it again? Maybe you didn't want to go then had a surprisingly good time? Tell me about it below if you like.
Anyway, I better get off to bed; I've an early wake-up and a big day of hiking tomorrow! Night y'all.
